Sometimes we need a reminder to be thankful for our senses. There is one such great granddad that lived an active life, farming and serving hereabouts. As years went on his body could not keep up with him, as it regularly does. Now he has a tough time seeing and hearing and getting around, but would still like to as much as anyone else. We need to help them have as standard of a life as possible. Naturally his eyes are shot for that, but he keeps up on his books just the same by trying audio books. One downside to Braille books were their sheer size. It needs a lot more space to pen in Braille than with this standard lettering. Also, it is also a troublesome new learning process to be able to read with the fingers. The govt supported Braille to the blind at first, but as technology and cultural progressions were made, now audio books are the preferred format. One government program called Books for the Blind, AKA Speaking Books, maintains audio and listening devices for those with legally blind impairments, free. As audio books took control of for Braille, they began on vinyl records, then the most common format was on cassette tape, with a current shift towards digital recordings. One man famous for traveling throughout the U. S. and visiting many American Indian clans is J. Harrington. It's been a developing process for just about eighty years to today's audio quality and convenience.
Digital recordings are preferred considering the complete book, and more than one even, is saved all on one disk. There is a market, for digital players that pander to the visually impaired. While Books for the Blind and NLS distribute some audio books, there are numerous sites online that offer mp3 downloads, for a tiny fee, and also tapes or CD's if that's preferred. I'm saying this assuming that since you can navigate to this page, you can also help your impaired mate to download the audio books on the PC. This way you can get just about any title that you, or they, are interested in, and as much you would like, and downloading is fast and convenient. Many mp3, or digital, players are available, for little cost. You can also play directly from your private PC if you like the sound quality on the speakers. For those with visible impairments they may have a tough time getting it set up all alone, but with a little help from a friend, they can have an opportunity to learn, relax, and enjoy life more totally with audio books.
